Notes From The Field

HP announces LaserJet 600 series featuring JetIntelligence

On May 16, HP Inc. announced its new LaserJet 600 series of printers and MFPs. The new machines refresh HP’s high-end A4 color and monochrome portfolio.

The HP JetIntelligence LaserJet printer

The new HP LaserJet 600 series

Stephan Schmitt, VP, HP Imaging, Office Printing Systems, described the new machines as completing the JetIntelligence refresh of HP’s Canon-manufactured LaserJet portfolio that began in 2015. The new models sit above HP’s LaserJet 500 series.

The LaserJet 600 family includes numerous models. We counted 20 different series within the 600 family. There are at least 39 different configurations, but there could be more that we are unaware of. On the color side of HP’s lineup, the family includes the Color LaserJet Enterprise M652 and M653 printers and the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681 and M682 series. The A4 monochrome devices include the LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608 and M609 printers and the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M631, M632 and M633 series. HP is also offering versions of all these devices for the contractual channel. These include the Color LaserJet Managed E65050 and E65060 series A4 color laser printers; the Color LaserJet Managed MFP E67550 and E67560 series A4 color MFPs; the LaserJet Managed E60055, E60065 and E60075 A4 monochrome laser printers and the LaserJet Managed MFP E62555, E62565 and E62575 A4 monochrome laser MFPs. And with all these new color and monochrome devices, HP has introduced a bevy of new consumables, all based on the firm’s JetIntelligence technology.

According to Troy Browne, marketing manager, HP Imaging, Office Printing Systems, the Color LaserJet M652 and M653 replace the Color LaserJet CP4025 and Color LaserJet Enterprise M651. The Color LaserJet CP4025 had been growing quite long in the tooth, having been introduced back in 2009, while the Color LaserJet Enterprise M651 was introduced in 2014. The Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681 and M682 replace the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M680 series, which was introduced alongside the M651 printers in 2014. Meanwhile, turning to the monochrome devices, the HP LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608 and M609 replace the LaserJet Enterprise M604, M605 and M606 from 2015, and the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M631, M632 and M633 replace the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M630 from 2014. The new Managed A4 models are net new additions that have been optimized for contractual channels to complement HP’s new A3 devices.

In general, with this product refresh, HP is essentially bringing new Canon engines featuring a more compact design, improved performance and JetIntelligence consumables technology to the upper end of its A4 portfolio. JetIntelligence technology consists of several consumables-related technologies: a color toner formulation called ColorSphere 3 and a black toner formulation called Precision Black, a page maximizer cartridge design, anti-fraud technology, print gauge technology and auto seal removal technology. Over the past couple of years, HP has been busy refreshing its entire A4 laser portfolio to this platform, and with the launch of the LaserJet 600 series, this transition is now complete.

With the LaserJet 600 series, is also introducing its new FutureSmart4 user interface. According to Mr. Browne, this new, modern, tablet-like user interface is not only available on the new 600 series models. Due to HP’s investment in its FutureSmart firmware, it can be rolled out on all HP’s LaserJet Enterprise devices, enabling HP to have the entire LaserJet Enterprise fleet on the same new user interface. Mr. Browne indicated that the FutureSmart4 user interface will be available on older devices starting this summer and into the fall. Similar to what we are seeing on other OEMs’ new user interfaces, the goal of this new design appears to be to make it as “smartphone-like” as possible and customizable with new apps.

Yet another area of focus for HP with the LaserJet 600 series is security. Mr. Browne emphasized how important it is for enterprises and offices to secure their networked printers, adding, “HP is the authority in print security.” The new LaserJet 600 series have many of the same security enhancements that HP introduced with the LaserJet 500 series. For example, the LaserJet 600 series have embedded security including Intrusion Detection, whitelisting and Sure Start—all security features introduced with the LaserJet 500 series. Mr. Browne also highlighted the new printers’ and MFPs’ encrypted hard drives with secure erase capabilities, HP’s move to disable ports and protocols that can provide unauthorized access and HP’s compliance with all internationally-recognized security standards. He added that HP FutureSmart firmware allows customers to provide fleet security, enabling customers to roll many security features backward to other devices, not just the new LaserJet 600 series.

New Color Laser Printers and MFPs

Annie Mosier, North America Supplies Category Manager for HP, and Jeannine Verbanac, Future Product Manager for HP, confirm that the new color models use a brand-new engine. They add, “The color 600 series has automatic media-type sensors (one for thickness of the paper and one for the gloss). We sense the thickness of the paper with ultrasound waves which enables us to detect and differentiate the lighter environmentally-friendly papers and optimize our fusing accordingly (uses less electricity to fuse lighter papers).” According to Ms. Mosier and Ms. Verbanac, these sensors are on by default so the end user doesn’t need to go through special steps to configure the device for the type of paper they are using. As noted above, the new Color LaserJet Enterprise M652 and M653 series printers replace the Color LaserJet CP4025 and Color LaserJet Enterprise M651, and the new Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681 and M682 replace the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M680 series. HP has been highlighting a similar set of improvements with all of its new machines based on JetIntelligence technology that stem from this new engine and consumables design, and the same is true of the new Color LaserJet Enterprise M652 and M653 and Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681 and M682. For example, HP notes that the new models operate at 100 percent duplex efficiency, whereas some competitive models (and previous HP products) print much more slowly than their simplex rated print speed when printing duplexed pages. Compared with their predecessors, the new color machines also offer faster first-page-out times, faster printing from sleep mode, and much higher cartridge yields.

Specifications and pricing for the new color laser printers and MFPs are shown below. The machines are available now through HP’s direct and indirect distribution channels.

As one would expect given the use of JetIntelligence technology, the new color laser devices use anew all-in-one toner cartridges. The machines use the same ColorSphere 3 toner formulation used in other color JetIntelligence machines. The toner features a hard shell for more efficient toner use and higher page yields and a soft core that melts at a lower temperature and thus consumes less energy. Low-melt toners also enable more compact printer designs and faster print speeds. The cartridges themselves use page maximizer technology and thus have smaller, more robust parts with more room for toner. The cartridges feature HP’s print gauge technology for intelligently predicting cartridges life. The new cartridges also feature a new chipset and HP anti-fraud technology, which can detect if counterfeit or “used” cartridges are installed and which has two optional features: (1) linking an installed cartridge with the device or fleet to help with inventory and cost management and deter theft and (2) enabling the use of only original HP cartridges in the device or fleet. The cartridges also feature auto-seal removal technology, which makes it easier and less messy for end users to install cartridges.

All the new color devices—the M652, M652, M681 and M682—use the same set of standard-yield cartridges, which are rated at 12,500 pages for black and 10,500 pages for color. The printers, the M651 and M652 series, are compatible with high-yield toner cartridges rated at 27,000 pages for black and 22,000 pages apiece for color. The MFPs, the M681 and M682, take different high-yield toner cartridges, which have higher yields of 28,000 pages for black and 23,000 pages each for color. As a result, cost per page (CPP) is a bit lower on the MFPs (1.17 cents for black and 6.56 cents for color) than on the printers (1.27 cents for black and 7.88 cents for color). There are also some long-life consumables listed below for which we do not have pricing and which are not included in HP’s CPP calculations.

Managed Color Devices

HP’s new Color LaserJet Managed E65050 and E65060 series A4 color laser printers and Color LaserJet Managed MFP E67550 and E67560 series A4 color MFPs are clearly based on the Color LaserJet Enterprise M652 and M653 and the Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M681 and M682. As HP states, they have been optimized for contractual channels. So, for example, we noticed that maximum monthly duty cycles were higher than on the transactional models. Also, the contractual models take different, higher-yield toner cartridges.

Some key specifications for the Color LaserJet Managed E65050/65060 and Color LaserJet Managed MFP E67550/67560 are shown below. Unfortunately, as of the time of writing, we did not have specification sheets for the MFPs, so we are missing some data on these units. The Managed models are available now but only through HP’s contractual channels. HP has not release pricing for these models, as dealers will set pricing.

New Monochrome Laser Printers and MFPs

As noted earlier in this article, the LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608 and M609 series printers replace the LaserJet Enterprise M604, M605 and M606. Meanwhile, the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M631, M632 and M633 replace the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M630. Just like the color devices, the new monochrome units are based on a new Canon engine. These machines have the same security improvements and new user interface as their color siblings as well as all the benefits from the move to the new JetIntelligence platform. Mr. Browne stated that these improvements include faster print speeds, faster first-page-out times, faster printing from sleep mode, faster scanning speeds, 100 percent duplex efficiency and bigger cartridges yields.

Specifications and pricing for the LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608 and M609 and the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M631, M632 and M633 are shown below. These models are available now through HP’s direct and indirect distribution channels.

While we won’t recap all the same features of the JetIntelligence consumables design described above here, the new monochrome models’ cartridges use these same technologies.

There is, however, something new and unique about the toner formulation deployed in these machines. Ms. Mosier and Ms. Verbanac tell us that the Precision Black toner for the LaserJet 600 models has been reengineered to be more spherical in shape than the previous generation of ground toner. This new formulation is a ground toner but there is a “post process” that create a more uniform toner particle size and shape. They explain, “The more spherical, the more efficient and precise the toner is which contributes to more pages from the cartridge. The toner still melts quickly to keep up with the speeds of the new printers.” So HP now has two different generation of Precision Black toner being used in JetIntelligence machines: the polymerized chemically produced toner (CPT) used in the LaserJet Pro 400 series and LaserJet Enterprise 500 series and the Precision Black ground toner with post process deployed in the LaserJet Enterprise 600 series.

The all-in-one toner cartridges deployed in the LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608 and M609 and the LaserJet Enterprise MFP M631, M632 and M633 are shown below. The M607 takes only the 11,000-page HP 27A replacement cartridge that results in a CPP of 1.73 cents. All the other models are compatible with this same toner cartridge, but they can also take the 25,000-page HP 37X toner cartridges and the 41,000-page HP 37Y cartridge. With the HP 37Y installed, the M608, M609, M632 and M633 have a best CPP of 0.98 cents. Once again, there are also some long-life components for which HP did not provide pricing and which are not included in these CPP calculations.

Managed Monochrome Models

HP’s new monochrome A4 devices for the contractual channel are the LaserJet Managed E60055, E60065 and E60075 printers and the LaserJet Managed E62555, E62565 and E62575 MFPs. Most of these models’ specifications correspond to the transactional models on which they are based, the LaserJet Enterprise M607, M608, M609, M631, M632 and M633.

As was the case with the Managed color devices, the new Managed monochrome units have higher maximum monthly duty cycles and bigger cartridges yields than their transactional counterparts. There are some other differences in product specifications from model to model as well. HP will not be publishing pricing for these models, which are available now through HP’s contractual channels.
