Kyocera's ECOSYS P3060dn

On March 7, Kyocera Document Solutions America announced the ECOSYS P3060dn family of A4 monochrome laser printers. The series includes four models: the 47 ppm ECOSYS P3045dn, the 52 ppm ECOSYS P3050dn, the 57 ppm ECOSYS P3055dn and the 62 ppm ECOSYS P3060dn.

Kyocera’s press release indicates that the new printers replace the ECOSYS FS-2100DN, FS-4100DN, FS-4200DN and FS-4300DN, which Kyocera introduced back in 2012. It is unclear if the new printers are based on the same engine technology as their predecessors.

Kyocera has made improvements from one generation to the next in a few areas. The press release notes that the new printers offer “increased processing power, memory and Wi-Fi Direct capability.” Except for the P3060dn, which shares the same 62 ppm print speed as the previous FS-4300DN, print speed has been improved by 5 ppm on each of the new models. Maximum monthly duty cycles have been improved as well to 200,000 pages on the P3045dn, 250,000 pages on the P3050dn, 275,000 pages on the P3055dn and 300,000 pages on the P3060dn, up from 150,000 pages on the FS-2100DN, 200,000 pages on the FS-4100DN, 250,000 pages on the FS-4200DN and 275,000 pages on the FS-4300DN. The new printers also offer optional wireless connectivity and Wi-Fi Direct, as well as mobile printing support.

Kyocera notes that the new monochrome laser printer series is Kyocera Fleet Services (KFS)-ready. KFS is a cloud-based monitoring service that allows authorized dealers to handle many maintenance tasks for their customers without on-site visits.

Price points are the same on the new models as the old. The ECOSYS P3045dn, P3050dn, P3055dn and P3060dn are available now via authorized Kyocera dealers at manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRPs) of $1,259, $1,469, $1,629 and $2,439, respectively.

Cloudy Consumables Info

Kyocera’s U.S. brochures for the new printers had no information on consumables, and very little information could be found about the new units’ consumables online.

Kyocera’s European sites seem to indicate the units use new toner cartridges, the TK-3140, the TK-3170 and the TK-3190, with respective yields of 12,500, 15,500 and 25,000 pages. However, according to Kyocera’s manual for the models sold in the United States, Kyocera is offering four different replacement cartridges for the family in the United States: a 12,500-page cartridge for the P3045dn, a 15,500-page cartridge for the P305dn, a 21,000-page cartridge for the P3055dn and a 25,000-page cartridge for the P3060dn. U.S. part numbers and MSRPs for these SKUs were not available.
 

Kyocera notes that the printers ship with lower-yield starter toner cartridges. The P3045dn’s ship-with-toner cartridge is rated at 6,000 pages, the P3050dn’s starter toner cartridge yields 8,000 pages and the P3055dn and P3060dn each ship with a 10,000-page toner cartridge.

As is typical for Kyocera, the printers also use super-long-life drums. Kyocera says the preventative maintenance cycle (which is when the drum is replaced) on the P3045dn is not until 300,000 pages. The preventative maintenance cycle is higher still—500,000 pages—on the P3050dn, P3055dn and P3060dn.

Typically, Kyocera’s value proposition is low total cost of ownership (TCO). Its hardware is priced somewhat higher upfront than competitive models, but low output costs, stemming in large part from the firm’s super-high-yield drums, lead to cost savings over time. We presume the same is true of Kyocera’s latest monochrome laser printer series, but unfortunately without having consumables pricing we were unable to look at cost per page (CPP) for the new units.
