On December 20, Kyocera Document Solutions America announced four new A4 monochrome laser MFPs: the ECOSYS M2635dw, ECOSYS M2040dn, ECOSYS M2540dw, and ECOSYS M2640idw.

The product rollout is part of a broader release. At its May dealer meeting, Kyocera announced plans to roll out 31 new printers and MFPs in its fiscal 2017.

Kyocera classifies the new ECOSYS units as its “low-volume” models for smaller workgroups, However, the entry point to Kyocera’s lineup is upmarket from that of many rival printer vendors, with print speeds starting at 37 ppm, maximum monthly duty cycles starting at 20,000 pages and price points starting at $816.

While Kyocera did not reveals its replacement strategy in its announcement, based on the models currently listed on the company’s website, it seems likely that the ECOSYS M2635dw, M2040dn, M2540dw and M2640idw will replace the ECOSYS FS-1035MFP/DP and FS-1135MFP from 2011, the ECOSYS M2035dn and M2535dn from 2014. The older devices were all 37 ppm MFPs. The new ECOSYS M2635dw is a 37ppm device, but the ECOSYS M2040dn, M2540dw and M2640idw all share a 42 ppm print speed.

Kyocera says the new MFPs have other features not previously available on its offerings for small to mid-size workgroups, such as support for mobile on-the-go printing and KYOCERA Fleet Services (KFS) cloud-based monitoring services for dealers. The flagship model, the M2640idw, has a 4.3-inch color touch screen and is HyPAS capable, able to support various business applications and “connector” apps, which allow seamless integration with many popular third-party document and content management systems.

Other specifications and differentiating features for the new models are shown below. Pricing starts at $816 for the M2635dw, $1,181 for the M2040dn, $1,371 for the M2540dw and $1,567 for the M2640idw.

New Consumables

Kyocera’s marketing materials said little about the supplies for the new ECOSYS monochrome MFP family, other than they use two-piece consumables including a separate toner cartridges and a Kyocera long-life drum.

According to some dealer websites, the drum for these units is rated at 100,000 pages, which is typical for Kyocera platforms.

It appears that the toner cartridges for the new machines are new. The M2635dw ships with a 1,000-page starter toner cartridge, and its replacement, the TK-1152 toner cartridge, is rated at 3,000 pages. The ECOSYS M2030dn, M2540dw and M2640idw all ship with a 3,600-page starter toner cartridge and take a 7,200-page replacement toner cartridge, the TK-1172.

Pricing for these consumables was not available. Typically, Kyocera’s strategy is to price its consumables competitively enough to offer one of the lowest total cost of ownerships (TCO) on the market while charging a bit more than its rivals for the hardware itself.
