Understanding Firmware & Printer Upgrades

Firmware is the “mind” of a printer. It is software within the printer that tells it what to do. Printer manufacturers occasionally issue firmware updates that improve performance and expand compatibility for various software and operating system upgrades, but sometimes, it is used as a weapon against the aftermarket.

Some printer firmware updates have locked out the ability to use aftermarket inkjet and toner cartridges. The firmware is embedded in the printer, so even new printers can also prevent remanufactured and compatible cartridges from working. In MPS environments especially, it is best practice to test each new printer to make sure it accepts third-party cartridges. If you have purchased a printer that does not accept remanufactured or compatible cartridges, please contact Static Control immediately.

This has been known to happen specifically in select HP, Lexmark, Dell and Samsung related printers. These occasions used to be rare but seem to happen with more frequency as OEMs try to block the aftermarket from gaining market share.

These updates can lead to lost business and confused end users who don’t understand why third-party cartridges no longer work in their printer.

What Should You Do?

Managing the firmware updates on your customer’s printers is the most effective way to ensure the printers will always be able to use third-party cartridges. In recent years, some HP printers have an automatic printer upgrade function that is a default setting. Customers don’t realize their printer has been updated until one day, they install a new compatible cartridge that will not work.

Customers need to know the implications of firmware updates. To keep using remanufactured and compatible toner and ink jet cartridges with no issues, they should say no to ALL printer firmware updates.

To help you convey this message, Static Control provides labels warning your customer of the ill-fated result of updating firmware.

Place these warning labels on the door of each printer as a clear warning to all printer users that firmware updates can lock out environmentally friendly remanufactured cartridges.
