HP Rolls Out OfficeJet Pro 7720 and 7730 A3 Inkjet All-in-Ones

HP recently announced some new models in its OfficeJet Pro 77xx family of wide-format inkjet all-in-ones. Starting this fall, HP will begin selling the OfficeJet Pro 7720 and OfficeJet Pro 7730, which join the OfficeJet Pro 7740 that HP announced in the fall of 2016 (see “HP’s Wide-Format OfficeJet Pro 7740 Aimed at Color Laser Replacement”). Rather than being true wide-format inkjets like HP’s DesignJet series, the new OfficeJet Pro 7720 and 7730 and the older 7740 are A3 (11 × 17-inch)-capable devices aimed squarely at small-office/home-office (SOHO) users and small businesses as affordable alternatives to color laser devices.

Ayush Jain, a future product manager for HP, tells us that the OfficeJet Pro 7720 will be available worldwide. However, the new OfficeJet Pro 7730 will be available exclusively in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) and the Asia Pacific including Japan (APJ). Mr. Jain adds that whereas last year’s OfficeJet Pro 7740 replaced the Officejet 7612 from 2014, the new OfficeJet Pro 7720 replaces the Officejet 7510 from 2015.

Mr. Jain says that in terms of engine technology the OfficeJet Pro 77xx family is based on the OfficeJet Pro 87xx series that HP introduced in the first quarter of 2016 (see “HP’s New OfficeJet Lineup Uses Mix of New and Old Supplies”). The OfficeJet Pro 87xx platform employed new permanent thermal print heads that offer a number of improvements over previous OfficeJet Pro heads including a larger die size of 10/8 versus 9/8 of an inch; more nozzles (1,568 total versus 1,376); a higher firing frequency of 30 kHz versus 24 kHz; reduced ink flux due to the new ink formulation; and increased carriage speed. The OfficeJet Pro 87xx also debuted a new four-color pigmented ink formulation with higher pigment loads and new ink tanks: the HP 952 and HP 952XL black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges and the HP 956XL black ink cartridge.

It is the newer engine design and inkjet cartridges, leveraged from the OfficeJet Pro 87xx, that provide the OfficeJet Pro 77xx models with most of their improvements over the predecessor models.

The first of the models introduced in this family, last year’s OfficeJet Pro 7740, was notable because for the first time HP made the faster print speeds, higher cartridge yields, and lower page costs associated with HP’s OfficeJet Pro models available for the first time in an A3 device. Compared with the previous OfficeJet 7712, the OfficeJet Pro 7740 offered significantly faster print speeds, more paper input (up to 500 sheets in the 7740), a 35-sheet duplexing ADF, higher cartridge yields (3,000 pages black and 1,600 pages per color versus 1,000 pages black and 800 pages per color), and lower page costs (1.70 cents black and 7.70 cents color versus 3.50 cents black and 10.04 cents color).

The new OfficeJet Pro 7720 offers a similar list of improvements over the OfficeJet 7510. ISO print speeds on the new model are 22 ppm in black and 18 ppm in color, up from 15 ppm in black and 8 ppm in color on the Officejet 7510. Mr. Jain notes that copy speeds have also been improved to 18 ppm in black and 12 ppm in color, up from 9 ppm and 6 ppm, respectively, on the previous model, and the first-page out time has been improved from 16 seconds to 9 seconds. The duty cycle has been improved to 30,000 pages on the 7720, up from 12,000 pages on the 7510. The OfficeJet Pro 7720’s cartridges yield and cost per page (CPP) improvements over the OfficeJet 7510 are the same as those for the OfficeJet Pro 7740 over the OfficeJet 7712. In addition, Mr. Jain notes that compared with its predecessor, the OfficeJet Pro 7720 offers print-quality improvements, an improved control panel (it maintains the same 2.65-inch size but the new display is easier to use and offers a more smartphone-like experience), and a more compact design.

Mr. Jain also says that compared with the previous generation of models, the new OfficeJet Pro 77xx models offered improved mobile printing capabilities including the HP Smart App for sending scans to email or cloud storage, managing printing tasks and scanning directly from mobile devices, and checking ink status. He also highlights the new units’ support wireless direct printing and support for printing from Apple, Android, Windows, and Google Chrome mobile operating systems.

With a U.S. manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $199, the new OfficeJet Pro 7720 is less expensive than its sibling, the $249 OfficeJet Pro 7740. As one might expect, the new OfficeJet Pro 7720 has a few less features than the OfficeJet Pro 7740 to compensate for being $50 cheaper. The first is that while the OfficeJet Pro 7740 had a 11 × 17-inch platen and so could scan and copy up to A3 pages (the maximum scan size from the ADF was 8.5 × 14 inches), the OfficeJet Pro 7720 has a legal-size (8.5 × 14-inch) platen and so the unit cannot scan or copy A3 pages. The A3 capability is limited only to printing. Another difference is that while the OfficeJet Pro 7740’s 35-sheet ADF was capable of duplexing, the OfficeJet Pro 7720’s 35-sheet ADF is simplex only. Also, whereas the OfficeJet 7740 comes equipped with two 250-sheet trays for 500 sheets of paper input, the OfficeJet 7720 has just a single 250-sheet input tray. It also appears that the OfficeJet Pro 7720 lacks the OfficeJet Pro 7740’s host USB port.

The new OfficeJet Pro 7730 for EMEA and APJ is similar to the OfficeJet Pro 7720 in that it has a legal-size platen and so can copy and scan up to legal-size paper but can print up to A3 sheets. However, like the OfficeJet Pro 7740, the OfficeJet Pro 7730 comes standard with 500 sheets of paper input. While pricing will vary by market, in the UK, the OfficeJet 7730 sells for £169.99 versus the OfficeJet 7720’s price of £149.99.

Existing Consumables

As noted above, the new OfficeJet Pro 7720 uses the same consumables as the OfficeJet Pro 7740 and the OfficeJet Pro 8700 series: the HP 952, 952XL, and 956XL cartridges. Part numbers, yields, and U.S. pricing for these cartridges are as shown below. With the 956XL black and 952XL cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges installed, CPP is just 1.70 cents in black and 7.70 cents in color.

The previous OfficeJet 7510 used the HP 932/933 and HP 932XL/933XL tanks. Yields were significantly lower at 400 pages for the HP 932 black tank, 330 pages apiece for the HP 933 color tanks, 1,000 pages for the HP 932XL black tank, and 825 pages apiece for the HP 933XL color tanks. With the high-yield SKUs installed and based on current cartridge pricing, the OfficeJet 7510 has CPP figures of 3.50 cents in black and 10.04 cents in color—much higher than on the new OfficeJet Pro 7720.

The new OfficeJet Pro 7730 uses the same family of cartridges as its siblings, but those will vary based on region. In Europe, this family of cartridges is the HP 953/953XL, and in Asia it is the HP 955/955XL.
